Chapter 25

Grayson

Lila and I haven’t been out in the snow for long, but I listen to every word she says. When she tells me she thought she needed to convince me that I didn’t need an excuse of sleepwalking to crawl into bed with her, I almost shift and drag her back to the cabin.

Even my wolf wants me to transform onto two legs and say I’ll take her straight to bed if that’s what she desires from me. It would have been a complete disaster, though. If anything, she would have run away screaming and never looked back. She hates wolf shifters too much for me to just spring that on her.

We get closer to the trees that line the back of the cabin and that’s when I smell them. Another wolf is close by, and I don’t think I am the only one who could tell. Fear spikes in Lila’s scent and it freezes her to the spot.

I take off into the woods, hoping that my mate would get back to the cabin without me. As soon as I burst through the tree line, I hear them rather than see them. The sound of twigs cracking underfoot and heavy panting assaults my ears. The darkness is close on my tail, making demands to end the intruder’s life.

As I run, I think I am gaining ground, but the sound of footfalls gets fainter as my paws eat up the distance. I leap over a small stream and hit rockier ground but keep going. When I hit the fence a few miles from the cabin, the paw prints stop abruptly and become human feet. There’s no way anyone, or anything, can jump the fence from this side.

With a quick look up and down the length of the metal, I spot a gap. This one isn’t from general wear and tear. Someone has snipped straight through the links and pried them apart.

Someone has come through the fence. A shifter, for sure. I send my message through the pack link. I’m southeast of the rear of the cabin. I rein back my need to track them down. Lila’s on her own.

I’ll be right there. Go back to Lila, Cayden’s voice echoes.

I heed my alpha’s command and head straight for the cabin. I hear Lila inside when I get close. Her footfalls shift around the cabin as she tracks from the kitchen to the living room, slamming cupboard doors as she goes. I stop at the storage where we all keep clothes and slip into the same clothes I was wearing when I left this morning.

Once I’m dressed, I make my way around the side of the cabin and up the steps onto the porch. A quick knock has Lila screaming, and I take a deep breath. “Lila, it’s me.”

I hear her on the other side as she hurries for the door and pulls back the bolt. She flings the door open and runs into my arms. “Grayson! Oh my God. I was so scared.
